about

Sun and Moon are our lanterns by day and by night, sister Moon reflecting brother Sun's light, our two shining archetypes of the sacred masculine and feminine, here represented by two musical notes. The beginning of the piece establishes the Sun's fundamental C and building up a rising harmonic sequence, representing the sunrise. Then, descending scales are introduced. These follow a vowel sequence where each new scale raises the harmonics. Meanwhile, the Moon's A gradually seeps through, first in the middle range, then in the lower octave, becoming the new fundamental below the initial C. As the Moon's tone becomes more dominant, the harmonics become more prominent, representing the more mystical aspects of the Moon and night-time. The piece finds a resolution in the combination of these two tones by combining the overlapping harmonics in short melodies that shimmer in their various rhythms and meters, representing a playful balance between the two lights, and between yin and yang. Gradually the moon tones fade out, leaving us with the Sun, the source of light, of our solar system and of life on earth.

Frequencies have been established that correspond to their physical cycles: Sun: 126,22Hz = ±C, Moon: 210,42Hz = ±A. To create a musical match between these frequencies, I needed to make a slight adjustment. I raised the Sun tone to 128Hz (the 7th octave of 1Hz - 1, 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64, 128). The tone A is the 13th harmonic of C: 128 (x 13) is 1664, taken down a few octaves (832, 416): 208 &; 104Hz for the moon.
