Harmonics in Harmony
Around 1700 the modality of music was becoming so compromised that a big shift in tuning was established named 'Well Tempered'. In fact, based on the purity of the harmonics, this could also be called 'Quite Out Of Tune'! Instead of the pure fifth and octave, the semitone became the standard for tuning, accommodating chromatic modulations in harmony, a phenomenon that is quite unique to the development of 'western' music. 'Harmonics in Harmony' is based on the more ancient and natural tuning, with the pure fifths and octaves. There are two sequences of somewhat chromatic harmonies. The first, shorter one is heard in the beginning and at the end; and the second, longer one is heard three times in the middle of the piece. In these sections the vowels are chosen and pronounced precisely so that octaves can be heard, the overtones two or three octaves above the sung notes. The remaining sections in between these parts are more playful and dynamic, all based on the natural sequence of the harmonics.
Harmonics in Harmony has a strong basis in the nr.9. Time signature: 9/4, tempo: 45bpm, fundamental frequency: 90Hz, ± F#.
